Here is a post assignment for a rally in which we only had 3 hours to come up with. We were told to choose something that we felt strongly about, and I can't stand people that smoke, so i decided to do an anti smoking rally. Overall I like this, and am considering refining it into something nicer, but the only thing my teacher said was that it dosen't quite suggest the killing part, but overall I did a good job. The letters aren't the cleanest because I had to use my resources and use a webcam becuase the scanner was in use. I liked being under time, because it pushed me to make decisions.

Here is my cover. I took away the color, and restricted myself to using only two colors. Also, I fixed up some spacing by adding new fonts down towards the bottom. The inside of the booklet is killing me; its really alot of text to sift through, and it's taking a while to sort out how I want to lay out what I want. It's a great learning experience, but it's frustrating at times.

Food Truck Round 1

Here is my first round for the food truck visual branding. I struggled alot to get started on this, but I finally took a direction and I like how it turned out. Food trucks have a very distinct design style to them. Often the graphics wrap around the truck, overlap the windows, and are full bleed on the truck, and are vector graphics (simple yet colorful graphics are easy to put on a truck). Everything has to be said on the truck as the truck is your only method of advertising...its mobile advertising.

For 2 days, I had my heart set on making the truck look like an ambulance, however I was never satisfyed with what it looked like. It just looked boring, and not inviting, and the joke was right in front of everyone. Last minute at night, after working on this all week (which felt and looked like i had only worked on it for a few hours), i scrapped it and drew up a mascot for my truck. A crying pepper goes well with my tagline as well as the name because if the peppers crying thats not tough, and you better call the wambulance for that one! So I wrapped the mascot around the front of the truck to cover up the windows and made the text, front and back allude to an ambulance slightly to keep the truck consistent with the name. For something i agonized over, I actually like this. I am eager to continue working on it after crit which is in an hour of me writing this.

Here is my final logotype assignment presentation for The Design Process. There are a few things that I want to tweak up and finish and possibly take further, but its 5:30 AM and the deadline is at 6, so all I can do is do fix it for survey. I'm really happy with the outcome, the Google doc loses a little bit of the color, but I'm sure if you download it or zoom in on the Google doc you can see it in better quality. I'm afraid I went too small on some of the type, but overall I kept everything very consistent,which was a challenge. The website is still in a state where anything can happen. It's certainly an improvement from the first attempt at it, but it's still missing something. It feels like its like everything but then at some parts it's not. I'm hoping critique will give me some good insight on it.

Wonderbread Campaign

So here is me and my partners Wonderbread campaign that focuses on once you have no Wonderbread, no other bread exists. Without Wonderbread you resort to spreading peanut butter and jelly on your hands and eating your hotdog in your cupped hands.

Fiji Water Campaign

For Copy writing class we were assigned to market water in a unique and different way, rather than just do 3 print ads like we had been doing for a while. My partner and I decided to market Fiji water in a way that it became interactive with the current and potential costumers. The first part of the campaign is a urban installation for an idea area like Time Square, where Fiji would bring Fiji to an area that is in desperate need for some tropical life. Around the premise we would then have people handing out sweepstakes flyer with a free water that advertised a free trip to Fiji. For those that signed up, they would then receive a post card in the mail thanking them, giving them complimentary seeds to grow their own hibiscus flowers (the flower on the actual packaging of the bottle) and a qr code for a micro website that in a nutshell tells customers why Fiji is better than other water companies. Here is the roughs; this is something I would like to push somehow to become a potential portfolio piece, or at least a piece closer to looking finished.

My partner did the backgrounds for all the images, and the urban installation sketch as well as the website. I did the flyer and the post card.

Here is the book cover. This is before I've shown him, i finished it just in case they were due today, cause i'm not sure if hes just going to show us the method to bind it and then expect it done next thursday, or if he expects them due today to he can approve them to be bounded. If they aren't due then it's ok cause then I get to show him it after class and improve it even more.

Things I fixed were alot of the justification on the type, like the rivers, hyphenation, and widows. In adition to that, i added a drop cap at the beginning of the body copy to give it more of a distinct feeling from the other type. Before, everything looked too much just like type on the page. I also flipped the photo so that the door was is on the front cover now. I also upped some of the legibility of the minor type stuff like the price and the barcode contrast.

It's 4:00 am, and i'm exausted. I feel I haven't put my 100 % in any of my work, maybe i've been putting in 90%...but it's not cutting it. Since tonight, I have been organizing my time and doing my work until I am satisfied with it. This logotype project is doing a logo only utilizing type, for any company/organization of our creation. After trying to make something cool and hip sounding, i decided on The Design Process. The Design Process is a company that is available to anybody who needs something desgined, however The Design Process does it all for you, hence the process in The Design Process. In attempt to show that, I have illustrated the word process, as well as type setting design in Helvetica. I think these are very appropiate and are simple enough but informational enough for a logo, especially since we have to use them for business cards and letterhead and envelopes. I have some ideas for the envelope but I haven't executed them. The logo's will be critiqued tomorrow, so I hope they are as cool as i think they are!

by the way, my book cover will be done soon, and bound to a paperback book by next thursday!

The Handmaid's Tale book cover

Here is my final, ready for print, The Handmaid's Tale book cover by Margaret Atwood. I simplified it so the entire cover both front and back utilize one image. Personally i feel that a doorway represents a lot in this book. First off, the doorway represents Offred being forced to have sex with her Commander because she has pure ovaries. Second, a doorway is an entrance that leads into something else, and this doorway represents a mysterious doorway representing Offred's future and well being. The fact that you can't see past the door, you only see the shadow represents this mysterious one sided messed up utopian futuristic society Offred has become victim to.

A doorway often times represents a struggle, hence the saying, to open doors. Offred has been denied education and freedom, which can be thought of as possibly being behind that open door, which is further explained at the end of the book when she escapes...however the book never explains if she escaped successfully. This is why i figured the doorway with a cast shadow is appropriate for this book, as well as the brick textured letters to represent hardship and the brick wall surrounded by what used to be Harvard university. The bricks are supposed to be secondary to this book. The doorway is made out of cut paper and my lamp.

I can't wait to see how this goes over in class, I stayed up till 5 this morning finishing this, and I'm actually proud of it. I know it has some quirks in it, but I'm willing to fix them because I think it turned out successful! Once we finish it for good, we are going to bind it to scrap paper and make a fake dummy paper back novel. I will post pictures of that when it is created.

I'm designing the new sticker for Flatface. I have been wanting to do a sticker for Flatface Fingerboaridng for a while and now i'm finally doing it. Here is the sketch for it, and I can already tell you that the vector version looks even better already. It should be done soon, whenever i get some free time. I can't wait to see this printed and put on people's fiungerboard parks!

Graphic Design - Re-do an Ad

For graphic design, which i haven't had yet (due to the hurricane and labor day), my teacher assigned us to find a print advertisement that we liked, and one that we didn't like. We have to back up why we liked the one we liked, and we have to redesign however it is needed, the advertisement we didn't like.

I went to the library (pratt has an AMAZING library), and took an TIME magazine off the shelve, along with a Thrasher skateboarding magazine. I LOVE and have always loved skateboarding ads (I credit my interest of advertising and graphic design to skateboarding magazine), and i figured I would find some ads that i would like. The TIME magazine was for normal every day advertisements...i figured TIME would have the best of the best ads, but i was wrong.

Flipping through, the Mutual of America retirement ad struck me violently. It looked like a cheesy informational hot to movie from the 80's. Below, I redesigned it to give it a more contemporary feel. I kept it simple, unlike the original which has far too many words on it and too many fonts. To strip it down, I eliminated a lot of the copy from the original and reworded it. I created icons that related to the benefits that Mutual of America offer; a lock with the doller sign to represent security of your money, a magnifying glass with the up and down arrow to represent watching your money grow as you invest it for your retirement, and outstanding service as the check in a box. The headline is asterisked with my icons which are defined in a key box below it. Each word relates to the icon, and after all, doesn't Mutual of America want their customers to feel like they aren't having to do all the work...it should be a breeze. I didn't want to use any pictures of anybody because i felt that this ad is more of an informational ad than anything, and any person of any age over 20 can start saving for their retirement plan, so this should be as non specific as possible.

The ad that i thought was creative was a Habitat skateboards ad from Thrasher Magazine. Look at that amazing hand donw type, with cut paper! The colors and textures of the paper are exciting as well as how all the type is locked into a square. I love how since the type didn't make a square they added rectangles of paper to make the square. The picture compliments the type very nicely, and overall this ad has unity between colors and textures. The type is commanding yet not over powering to the ad. Skateboard ads have some of the best graphic design.

Typography Sketches - The Handmaid's Tale

Here are my sketches for The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. This is a book about a woman who is held prisoner under a commander who's civilization holds women captive and uses them as child bearers to those who aren't fertile. Offred, the main character, tells the story of her life that is ridden of education and freedom. The only thing she is allowed to do is go on shopping trips. She quickly makes friends with people who plan to over throw the commander, and also becomes friends with a man named Nick, who she then has a secret affair with behind the backs of the commander and the commander's futuristic police called the Eyes who see watch he citizens' every move. With that said, these comps/sketches that i agonized over (and when i say agonized, i mean it) should back up my brief summery above. This project's constraints were that the title of the book couldn't be in a type face, thus it could be photographed or arranged by textures or hand drawn.

After looking at retro movie posters and books, I was very inspired to make something similar to them. In short, the black book cover details the doorway to the room in which she is forced to have unemotional sex with the commander or whoever she is assigned to. Above, the Eye watches her every move, all while i drew the text in the doorway shadowing out.

The next one is the symbol for women made out of a sperm going into an egg where the head of the sperm makes the lower half of the A in the Tale. This one is more playful, and the text is more quirky, but it's serious in the illustration and the bricks behind them that symbolize the brick wall around what Harvard used to be; which she frequents often on shopping trips that reminds her of how education had been taken away from her.

Lastly, the scrabble book cover shows the title of the book drawn out to look like scrabble pieces, a game that she wasn't allowed to play, but a game that she played often with Nick, who she eventually has frequent sex with, which is against the rule. The bricks are used again, but this time colored to look like the squares on a scrabble board. This is my least favorite sketch I did, as well as the last one i did.

In the end, i really would like to go forth with the black book cover as i see it being the most graphic and utilizing the most typography. I want to use textures of paper and other things like the retro movie posters i posted in the hyperlink. We'll see which one i follow through with after critique!

Advertising - Billboard Ad

Here is my billboard for Levi Jeans. I took the picture myself, and wrote the copy. After much thinking and writing down copy, I decided to settle on my idea that Levi jeans are so comfortable that you'll forget you are wearing them. With that said, I had to think of times that were ironic to keep wearing your pants; the shower seemed the most obvious and appropriate for the ad...plus the shower is an easy recognizable setting. I figured a women would be more appropriate for the ad since sex sells, so I asked my friend Holly if she would pose for me. I show the photo at a wider angle and less zoomed in so i could zoom in when it came time to make it fit the billboard. I had to plan ahead of time to make sure that I had enough room to crop the photo to get her waist to look like she wasn't wearing a shirt. Other than that, I had to Photoshop out a few minor details like her sleeves that were rolled up, but I think I managed pretty well. I am very happy with how this came out, we'll see how it goes through critique tomorrow.

Copy Writing - 1st Assignment

I am half way through my second week at Pratt Institute and it's been quite an experience. Besides not knowing where I am, how to do anything on the campus, how to use the printers and computers in the labs, and spending a lot of unnecessary money on food: this school is awesome. Although I feel stressed out 75% of the time, I really enjoy how intense my classes are. I feel pushed to do work above my own expectations. I haven't seen any work from anybody else in my class, and I don't know how harsh my teachers are yet in critique. As of now I'm very nervous and on edge the entire time while im doing my work; I hope this feeling goes away. Feeling this way though, makes me push my work until I feel I've hit my own personal limit.

This project was to take a female product that you wouldn't personally buy, and make an ad for it utilizing copy writing. We had to have a headline and body text, and we were allowed to art direct if we wanted. My teacher said we could just sketch in the art direction, but just to be safe I went the extra mile and did the ad on the computer.

I chose Nair hair removal lotion, and came up with a new word to brand their company with; "Nairfidence". Normally I wouldn't be confident enough to follow through with this direction, however I thought it was clever enough copy. I though it fit Nair's previous Short Shorts campain, which was all about being confident to wear short shorts. Nairfidence is the word used for the confidence gained form women after using Nair. My art direction is fitting in my opinion because the ad is supposed to embrace women's confidence. Because of that, the ad looks as if it was made by hand, with confidence. Since the word is made up, I felt it wasn't fitting if it were to look really clean and type set. Also, I chose to use illustrated legs because it dosen't create a standard for women, it becomes an icon instead. My hope is that it comes cross overall to the viewers...however I won't know until tomorrow.

After not drawing much the entire summer, I drew this one of me last night. I felt a bit rusty, but i think over all this came out pretty successful. Looking at it now, i see a few things i want to improve on on my next one, but i really enjoy working on colored charcoal paper, which i have never done until now. I miss doing 3 self portraits every week. Even though it was stressful, i really enjoyed it. Maybe when i have more time i will try and do it more regularly.

well, i have to "finish" this for tuesday. Im not sure if ill be able to finish it for tuesday completely but ill try my hardest to get it close because ideally i want to include this in my survey for the end of the year. I keep on correcting my proportions and everything as im going. The more i look at my face the more i realize things that i overlooked painting it. I am having trouble with my nose and mouth and jaw, so hopefully i can work that out tomorrow, but i think its coming out great. Im very confident with it, and my painting style is getting tighter without me even realizing it.

I am SOOO close to finishing my branding project. Its been a rough project. I had to start over almost 3 times, but i fianlly arrived at a good idea. I invented a recycling campaign that focuses on the recycling of plastic, which is a very prevalent issue right now. In fact, certain plastic bottles, the PETE ones, can be recycled into usefull things for the environment like clothes. So i made an informative booklet, and a promotional tshirt with the logo on it and a promotional box. The box can be used as a stencil, and the booklet uses many pictures of textures that i took using the macro lense of my camera. I used Univers as a font, and the advocate logo is in bauhaus. I used the name advocate because it means to promote to th epublic something important. I am so tierd, i can barel think of anything to write. I will provide a much more in depth explanation, and pictures when i finish this project for good tomorrow. So far, heres the booklet and the adds that i made for it! I will upload the ads later because they take too long to upload.

Oil painting progress

So i painted again today, and i ended up just wiping everything i had off because i changed my light source, which made me redo alot of my color. Luckily, with oil paints, when you wipe it off, alot of the color and progress you made before stays, which shows through when you paint over it. it really made my piece dynamic. before i was painting with my glasses off, and then after i wiped it off, i worked with my glasses on, and my color became less muddy and more defined. I still have a long ways to go however, i think its begining to have depth, and volume, and im working out the kinks of proportion and likeness as i go. I really love working with oil paint though. I am looking forward to doing it over summer break as well.

1 Week comic strip

This was a quick assignment that i missed when i was sick. We had to look at old comics and make one of our own which references the one we looked at. I looked at Blondie, which is focused on relationships, and jokes about men and women in relationships. I decided to make a comic where the girl trys testing her boyfriend, where she asks him who the prettiest girl is in the whole world. When he thinks he has the right answer he says YOU ARE! thinking hes all suave. Insulted by being called pretty, because she think of herself as beautoful, and pretty is sub par, she expresses her anger on him by hitting him, and makes sure he knows that shes beautoful, not pretty.

I know i spelled prettiest wrong, i wasn't thinking when i did it. Also, for sopme reason, everybody that i showed this to, didn't understand it, and didnt understand the joke. I don't understand because its pretty simple. Oh well!

The monster assignment was rough for me. I dont like drawing things that don't exist. It was a good assignment for me though, because it helped me get creative and think. I painted this all from memory, and all the colors are from memory. I didnt use any reference. it was a good challenge for me, and i am pretty happy with it. it made me think of where light would hit a figure, and what parts get duller, and what are bright. It's a cyclops, who lives under the groundm making the lightening bolts for Zeus, so i drew him hitting a hammer making the liighting bolts.

This drawing is from not reference at all, and was supposed to use scale to represent fear. At first i was gonna illustrate the feeling that your ceiling will collapse on you, but i got bored so i decided to use my pens and make it a monster eating your, so it coulod be nightmares aswell. Either way, even though i dont enjoy these assignments, and i dont really enjoy drawing monsters and stuff, i still came out with a kinda cool drawing.

I have been trying to draw faster, and sight more angles and proportions as i draw. I have been tyring to keep my mind busy when i draw and ask myself questions of what liens up with what. it certainly helps...also i enjoy doing foreshortened poses, because there is less to draw but more depth.

I am self teadching myself oil painting

So i am self teaching myself how to oil paint with a few pointers and tips from the fine arts students who are nice enough to explain it to me. I really like it more than acrylics however im still learning about how little or how much oil to use, and when to use solvent rather than oil. it's all new to me however i feel im progressing more than ever and painting faster with oils rather than acrylic. This is from 3 work sessions. This is due at the end of the year which is in 2 or 3 weeks. Also, i did this starting from one of my watercolor self portraits and then i stopped looking at it and used the mirror as my main source. I wanna stop doing portraits on myself however its good practice for me, but i often find myself not as excited as i am when i do other people.

I am really happy with how everything turned out, and i got a good response from people that came. it was a steady flow of people for about 45 minutes, and soem of my teachers came. I am really looking forward to the summer when i can get full back into my own work and not have to worry about school work.

2 portraits of Suki

Suki is very difficult to draw. Her nose, and eyes make is very challenging, as well as her hair, which is very thin and dosent give her much depth when drawing her. So when drawing her, you have to get her facial structure down really close. I have been sick for the past week and a half, and while im not blaming my proportion problems in these drawings on being sick, it has been hard to focus alot while im sick. With that being said, i also have three other portraits that i just did not do well on that i won't be posting. I just wasn't in them as i am in my other ones, and it was while i was fighting with being sick. Also, i have been exploring mechanical pencils for now. For some reason i just dont feel like using ink or water color. I also am going to start working with ball point pen, and acrylics.

Im doing an acrylic painting of a monster for illustration class right now and its really challenging for me, but i wanna be able to get better at it.

Here is my personal business card i designed. Any input would be greatly appreciated because im not entirely sure about how this came out, and i know im definitely not done, but for now i am, i just need some direction in how to make it better and more effective.

I like this idea, how the pills are not the focus, but it almost shows that doing pills is being put in someones past and they are using this new pill to get the new solution. Also, the die cut is brighter and more in the foreground and the focus. I am willing to retake the photo, but i do like it.

So my xray poster didnt sit well with me. I tried a new idea today, and personally, i feel i had more success with this one. I think the idea is more concrete. It took me alot of thinking, and alot of ideas that led me right where i started, until i thought of the correlation between the art world being rough, and my rugged background, and the simple and easy icons of art materials and tools i created. It just made sense to me. Lifes rough, especially the art world, but pratt and prattmwp will help you get a job and be successful, and with them it will be easy. I am very happy with this. This is the rough, as i am going to send it to my teacher and see if she responds with changes i could make.

So this is the pratt poster for next year. At first i liked my idea and the way it looked, but the more i worked with it, i became less and less interested, and i became more and mor eunhappy with the concept. I was scared that the scissors might have been scary, or that the poster would come off with a medical vibe which i am just using at a metaphor. My teacher never quite gave me the best insight on what direction i need to go, other than just upping the contrast on the xray, in which i found on creative commons with the permission of my teacher. This, like most all viscom assignments, has been beaten in the ground with limited constructive criticism. I asked around the classroom on what i should do, and i got more of a direction than during class critiques. My teacher did help me get closer to the tag line, but in the end i took most liberty with this assignment. However, i cannot take credit for the idea of using the ribcage xray because i would have just left it a square of the lightbox. I guess im just very frustrated at the moment, and this poster has alot of potential, but im struggling with progressing forward on it. I do like the way it looks, but i am unsure of what my teacher may say. Oh well.

Suki portrait

I think this is my best portrait of somebody else that i have done. Not onyl does it resemble the person i did it of, but it has texture, light, and mood in it. The expression is brought out even more by the application of the medium. I used ink, watercolor, and white paint. I hope to do more in this free and expressive style. This drawing took me all night, primarily drawing it took the longest time. I stayed up till 6 am doing this piece, all to have my teacher glance over it. I did it for myself though, because i would like to use this in my show.

So, after struggling this week doing a drawing of myself from the mirror, i scrapped the idea this week, and did portraits of other people's facial expression, while trying to get their likeness as well. It was a nice breath of fresh air from drawing myself. The first on of me is from last week, and the other two are from tonight. I hit a rough patch this week, where i couldnt draw anything, and now tonight i am back in action! I drew these from pictures that i took of two students from my school. I used light sources as well, which i often dont with the drawings of myself. I think these two are two of my best drawings ive done so far. I wanna do more of people from myschool because im pushed more to draw them so they look like them because of the fright of showing them after i finsih and them saying that it dosent look like them. I feel competitive when i begin to draw and redraw parts of them just to make the drawing look just like them.

Here is my card. I struggled with it, and i still am, but i feel this is closest i will get until i show my teacher next class. I wanted to make an interesting card, that had texture, so i made the thankyou card cover with my silk screening kit, and silk screened it on a cover of a crappy book that was in the free bin in the library. Then i scanned it in and also took a part of the texture from the book as well to use for the backgrounds for the other pages in the card. The text pops off it, but at the same time it dosent and thats whre i struggled with it. I think its because of the texture of the background, but i like how it looks. This is the template for the card so this is what it looks like before you fold it. Ill try and get pictures of it folded up.

The Sharperner Award

She told me she was making a better one, but look, theres my logo as the header!!! i am so excited seeing this, and after reading it, look at the schools that are possibly attending the event! They will all see my logo! Im just happy, im not expecting anything special because of this, but im exicted that everyone gets to see my logo on the sheet

New self portrait

So, in my opinion, i think this is my best self portrait yet. This is done in blue and black ink, and watercolor. This is done from a photo graph because i tried doing one again from the mirror and it came out like crap, so i decided to just use a photo again. I took liberties with my brush strokes and i really like how the colors tell my emotion. I am beginning to understand when pen is necessary, and i personally don't always want to use pen anymore with my ink or watercolors.

The first one was completed in roughly an hour from the mirror with a colored pencil. I usually hate drawing from the mirror, but my teacher asked me to this week, so i forced myself to, and honestly, i completed this drawing in less time than my other drawings from a photo and i really had alot of fun drawing it. it's more sketchy than my other ones, but i plan on doing maybe one more sketch from the mirror, and then a more finished drawing from a photo for my last portrait. I really love this assignment. I have to do 3 self portraits every week. Well, it can be of other people, but i like drawing myself alot haha.

The other drawing is done from a photo from last week that i forgot to upload. its done with charcoal pencil, and acryllic paint, with a red conte crayon. I really like how this one came out, hoewever it took me along time because i struggled getting the drawing right. Either way, im really satisfied with my drawings lately.

Type Specimen

Here are my type specimen pages. I wanted to make the type easily read, and visually nice to look at, but not distracting when looking at the type. Afterall, the purpose of a type specimen book is supposed to be a quick reference or a nice arrangement of the type to help you find the typeface you want or possibly pick this typeface to buy. Other people were designing it with alot going on the in the background. While that is one way to do this, i really just wanted to design a worksheet/reference type page instead that was simple and nice. Sometimes while designing this, i thought this was too simple and boring. Maybe it needs some fixing but im done. The cover page was done the same way as my empty bowls project, and i did it on a crumpled up piece of paper. I like the way that looks, and its a nice offset to the rest of the book which is all neatly arranged. I hope my teacher likes mine.

Tarrot Cards

The two Tarrot cards i got were The Lovers, and The Two of Cups. The lovers is about someone who had a pre determined direction in life until something strikes him/her to divert from his original path. This leads into the self explanatory definition of the card as meaning two people madly in love, but i chose to narrate people by using cars, and the directions one chooses to drive for the different roads, the normal one and the cliff.

The two of cups is about friendship, divine friendship. These two people help each other replace a light bulb, but one guy is grosser than the other one, and is on top. Its a metaphor to show how it dosent matter who the person is if they are your good friend. Friends will go at far distances to help one another.

These were done with charcoal, ink, watercolor, and water.

Empty Bowls Poster

This post card was interesting. I screen printed the bowls onto cardboard from a stencil i made from a photo. Then i printed out Empty Bowls Project with Futura font and scribbled over it with ball point pen on a light board, and then scanned it in a live traced it. Then i made the back of the post card to counter the roughness of the front. Luckily this post card didnt need a space for addresses, so i had more room to design. This version is a bit different then the final one i did, but ill post it after i make the pdf a jpeg.

This was a quick flyer for an event that we also have to design the post card for. I didnt want to do something that had a bowl in it. It's too typical, and as of now, im trying to experiment with different ways to get an idea and aesthetic across rather than tyring to complete the assignment straight forward. I suppose its me taking a risk that isnt much of a risk, but to me it is. I used the rounded edge rectangle, and made a bowl out f it, and then found color swatches online, and then colored them, lowered the opacity, and then arranged them in a flower type pattern, and then patterned it in th ebackground. The type is a simple and clean font: futura. I like it, but im really nervous that its not good, or something. I dont know.

I did this by hand over a picture of my self and then i scanned it in and went over it in illustrator with the pen tool. Then i used the image of myself to get the color. My teacher kept a copy of it and make me sign it! hahahahah

This is my first entry to my sketchbook that my teachers making us keep. It has to have a consistent addition with the same subject matter. Im doing facial expressions, which is what they did last semester. This was stern, and i did it in ink, watercolor, and pencil. I didnt feel like using pen this time.

Both of these were done in class. One was done in Methods and Media and the other was done in Illustration. Neither are finished, but i think they are both close enough to being finished. I am trying to really understand watercolors rather than just using them like paint. I am learning still, but i feel watercolor is becoming my favorite medium. That and ink.

Water Is Life

Water Is Life was a long annoying drawn out competition that took place in Germany that was meant to raise awareness about contaminated water. I read on their site that ever 3 seconds a child dies from contaminated water and it just stuck with me. I made a miniature coffin to suggest the deceased baby and i had it being held in a humans hand because without the hands holding it, it would look like a normal sized coffin. I had to suggest the baby some how. I like the way i came out, but im sick of looking at it because i had to redo it a bunch of times, as well as re do the photograph a bunch of times too. Im ready to move on and look at this later on, but right now, i need to not see this.

The Sharpener Awards

The SHarpener Awards is a logo design that my teacher flew at us to make in one week. It's due on thursday but i decided to give it a go before it was due. I want to begin making simple logos, where the logo is separate from the text. The more i look around society, im realizing how the logo is always separate from the text. Rarely is there stuff that is built onto the text. For this logo i struggled alot with coming up with an idea that looked good in just black and white. I knew i didnt want to use a pencil substituted as an I, or incorporate an entire object like an entire pencil, so i used the tip of the pencil. Originally i just had the shavings, without the points, but it felt a bit misleading in what it was, so i added the pencil tips. We will see what my teacher says when its time i show them in crit. I am really happy with it as of now, but i am willing to make any changes if i have to.

Food Day Logo

Here is my logo for a nation wide food event. This event will stress healthy eating, and celebrate healthy organic foods, while promote the prevention of animal cruelty and poisons added to food. I decided to use the colors from the food pyramid, and arrange them in a non related pattern. I wanted to make a symbol that has something to do with the event (the colors) but when i made all the triangles point into each other they made a hexagon, so with the hexagon i just conglomerated them together to make a bee hive, or molecular pattern for no reason, and i loved the way it looked so i let it stay. I think the logo can be left open to the viewers interpretations however, and i really enjoy how bold and simple it is. Or atleast i think so/

so this was done in the beginning of the year, but i never got around to putting up on the blog for some reason. The background is paint scanned in, and then i traced people from the festival, and cut them out of paper and scanned them in and traced them with sharpie to give them an outline. The text is also cut out of bristol by hand, and painted. I really like this poster. I hope it gets chosen!

the picture on top is something i did in a half hour today cause i was bored waiting for dinner. Its ink, pastel, and pen. I wanna keep doing these because i want to develop a style. Ive been looking at artists latley who do portraits and i want a style. I know what i want them to look like but i havent gotten to that point yet.

The other thing is a painting i started. I wanna really explore a limited color palate and see how expressive i can make the expression look.

We had to do a halloween poster in on of my classes that utilized a pattern. I wasnt so crazy about using a pattern, so i am gonna say that yhe squigly text and dripping blood, and repeated windows on the buildings is enough to pass as a pattern or attitive pattern. The buildings are the studio buildings on campus, and the actual building that the party will be in. I wanted it to be a spooky old victorian building. If i could go back abnd do this again i would have not done it by hand, but i wanted to try doing it all by hand and not on illustrator. Anyway, i suppose i like the way it came out, but at the same time there is something i dont necessarily like about it but i cantr put my finger on what it is.

A big update

So i havent been posting, and im sorry : /. So basically i have been doing alot of great work lately. Im just gonna list a bunch of things ive been doing:

- my illustration teacher has the worst critiques, and i am beginning to not want to contribute to it.

- I've been thinking of ideas for this museum opening poster, and i keep drawing blanks. Im gonna dive into it today and just do it so i have something to show my teacher.

- Im doing this really halloween poster for my design procedures class, where it's got some cool squigly spooky hand drawn font with the shadows of the old scary victorian houses around Utica. It's gonna be really cool, and unlike the other peoples in my class. he didnt like my 4 first sketeches, but during the crituque i sketched something and showed it to him, and we both agreed...well i agreed... that it was a way better idea.

- We went to a print shop for a feild trip. It was awesome. It's a place called Dock 2 Letterpress, and they are one of the most well known places that still does woodblock printing. We got some hands on experience using some really awesome print machines, some as old as the first printing press by Johann Guttenburg (i butchered the spelling). It was great, and it was a great bus ride up because i just got to listen to my music and sleep. haha.

- I havent had time to do a personal project lately, but im thinking of starting one, or trying to fill up my moleskine cause i really miss the groove i got into during Summer.

- I took my art history midterm. Rocked it....i hope...i think at least. I was confident in my essay, and confident on all the slides, but i know i got maybe a few wrong, but overall i think i rocked it.

- Open mic night is on thursday. Im playing I Saw Water by Tigers Jaw with a few friends, and i think i wanna do At The Bottom Of Everything by Bright Eyes myself if i am confident enough hahahah. We shall see. I have been making music with the same group of people alot lately, and its amazing. We play at the church next door, and they ahve a drum set, and mics, and we sound like a real band. I also learned how to play some simple beats on a drum set. ITS AWESOME.

- English class is dumb.

-I changed my strings on my guitar and it sounds out of this world. Now i know what strings i should always get.

- For illustration i am doing this cool piece that i am probably going to finsih tonight, so ill post it up here probably. its a piece on the mexican drug war, done with pen and ink. I am doing it on drawing paper, and i like how the ink looks on it.

- I need quarters for laundry haha.

- Also i think the ink in my printer is going, but i havent been using my printer as much as i thought so thats good.

- Photo isnt that bad anymore, i like takign pcitures, and turning them into black and white in photoshop. I love black and white. Color is boring to me. Ill post my photos up here soon.

Sorry for the late posting. It's been busy for me lately! Here is a moving still life drawing i finished. We have to draw the still life area, and keep drawing it as my teacher changed it a bit ever like hour or so, and then he stopped moving it. First drawing class unit

We have spent 4 weeks on drawing foliage. Fun fun. This class turned out to be an experimental drawing class. This wasnt really what i wanted to do, but it turned out to be a succesful first group of drawings. I tried doing abstract stuff, and then tighter stuff. Then i even have drawigns where i tried using color, and failed hahah. I really like some of them, and really hate some of these drawings. I apologize for the crappy picture. I will get a better picture with my real camera soon, of each individual drawing soon. I just took this quickly during critique because they were all hung up on the wall at once.

We had to do an illustration of a body part to convey an emotion. I chose to illustrate my mouth, chewing on a pencil, to convey nervousness. it was really hard to jsut draw the mouth. I did it a bunch of times, getting frustrated each time, but i think i finally got it this time :) Its done in ink and a fat sharpie. I've been trying different pens, and i like how bold and graphic the sharpie gets. I did it on bristol board, so the ink looks different than on watercolor paper.

Communications desgin: Vector logo

We had to do a vector logo for a made up product. I did a toilet company that sells toilets with arm rests, and leg rests. It's called "King Sitter"...HAHA. I really enjoyed making this, and i have another thing i wanna work on in illustrator just for the fun of it. It's a bear playing basketball, that i wanna hopefully make a good piece out of it. Sorry for bad picture, i have to figure out how to save this illustrator thing as a jpeg. This is flushmounted on foamcore too. it's where you glue it on the foam core, and then cut it so the edges line up with the foamcore.

Here are my ten self portrait illustrations that i did in black ink for illustration. I decided to make ten portraits that included me in all ten, but insetad of drawing things that i liked, i drew things that i did everyday. These things make me, me just as much as the things that i like. My teacher complimented me on my use of ink :)

we had to create type to photograph. I decided i wanted to use the word "worm" to show a book worm. I carved the letters into a book that i found in the free bin in the Library. I made it grayscale, and then made it a tint of light blurish grey duitone, or however you spell it :P.

We could paint anything we wanted to so i decided to paint an idea i have been toying with lately. I think the general subject of football players is sort of comical, but i wanted more of a meaning behind it. In highschool is think its stupid how teachers would give the star football players special help and treat them differently just so they could play in the game, meanwhile they were failing and deserved to not play. So the A represents the grade they received but didn;t deserve. After painting the A, i realized it looked like an anarchy symbol, so i figured it would put a less blatant meaning to if i made it look as if this football player is going around spray painting an A for anarchy but if one decides to look further they would make the connection of unfair treatment of students.

I dont know, im exprerimenting with narrative, and some humor i guess.

So this is basically about the relationship between something life size and miniature. Rarely do we have things that are fully functional in the same ways in miniature and life size.

I wrote the song, and played it on guitar while my roommate played drums over it. The kid skateboarding goes to my school as well.

Co-op Homework Assignment

Me and Travis Bradley did this piece together. The assignment was to work with another person on 2 boards at the same time. He came up with the sketch of the monster in like 30 seconds and we painted for around 2 and a half hours straight. Working with another person makes you realize certain things and notice what needs to be changed in your painting more than when you are working alone. I think this piece really came out successful.

I couoldnt get a good picture of it so heres all that i have of it. Within all the three you can probably get the idea of what it looks like.
